Adhesion switch on a gecko-foot inspired smart nanocupule surface.

چکیده
A gecko-foot inspired nanocupule surface prepared by an AAO template covering method was composed of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) and polystyrene blend. Both superhydrophobicity and high adhesion force were exhibited on the PNIPAm/PS film at room temperature. Moreover, by controlling the temperature, the wettability of the film could be switched between 138.1 ± 5.5° and 150.6 ± 1.5°, and the adhesion force could also be correspondingly tuned accurately by temperature. This reversibility in both wettability and adhesion force could be used to construct smart devices for fine selection of water droplets. The proof-of-concept was demonstrated by the selective catching of precise weight controlled water droplets at different temperatures. This work could help us to design new type of devices for blood bioanalysis or lossless drug transportation.

The discovery of the gecko’s remarkable foot adhesion has provided a riddle for engineers and scientists to solve: how can an adhesive surface be selectively sticky, directional, remain clean, and work on almost any material? Gecko feet stick to almost anything, in almost any condition (including underwater and in space), but do not stick unintentionally, do not stick to dirt, and enable the ge...
متن کاملTowards gecko-feet-inspired bandages.
A novel bandage inspired by gecko feet might one day be used during emergencies and internal surgeries. The bandage uses a combination of nanofabricated structures, biodegradable materials and adhesive surface chemistry that allows adhesion onto even wet, moving tissue.
متن کاملStaying sticky: contact self-cleaning of gecko-inspired adhesives.
The exceptionally adhesive foot of the gecko remains clean in dirty environments by shedding contaminants with each step. Synthetic gecko-inspired adhesives have achieved similar attachment strengths to the gecko on smooth surfaces, but the process of contact self-cleaning has yet to be effectively demonstrated. Here, we present the first gecko-inspired adhesive that has matched both the attach...
متن کاملExperimental investigation of the effect of tip shape in gecko-inspired adhesive devices under asymmetric detachment
Background It is usually challenging to achieve surfaces that are highly adhesive, yet can be detached easily. Geckos’ foot hairs, however, can be easily detached from a surface even though they adhere to it strongly enough to hold the animal’s body against gravity. Inspired by Nature, a combination of strong adhesion and easy detachment in adhesion system can be achieved and the possibility of...
متن کاملGecko toe and lamellar shear adhesion on macroscopic, engineered rough surfaces.
The role in adhesion of the toes and lamellae - intermediate-sized structures - found on the gecko foot remains unclear. Insight into the function of these structures can lead to a more general understanding of the hierarchical nature of the gecko adhesive system, but in particular how environmental topology may relate to gecko foot morphology. We sought to discern the mechanics of the toes and...
